BCcampus webinar hosted September 13, 2023.
Facilitator: Ian Linkletter
Host: Gwen Nguyen
Mattermost is an open-source communication tool that facilitates collaboration in a team chat environment (think Microsoft Teams or Slack, but open source!). It supports “anytime” communication — anytime, anyplace, any device. This contributes to an increased sense of class presence, with increased chances of connecting with an instructor or classmate when needed. In Mattermost, real-time and asynchronous communication are combined, meaning quick flurries of messages (i.e., chats) and more slowly evolving threaded discussions can coexist in the same space.
Mattermost can support the creation of a learning community for your course. In this session you will learn everything you need to know to get started. Participants will explore functionality with a scavenger hunt, practice building community within community using channels, exchange teaching strategies for using team chats, and evaluate the tool using a BCcampus technology evaluation rubric.
Access to Mattermost is provided by the OpenETC, the Open EdTech Collaborative hosted by BCNET, funded by BCcampus, and supported by a community of volunteers. You can use it for free, but you may need approval from your institution.
